Know Potassium Fertilizer and Its Function for Plants
Potassium fertilizer is one type of fertilizer needed by most farmers in Indonesia, because most of the potassium nutrient in the soil is still relatively small. Potassium fertilizer is included in the single fertilizer group that is often used by farmers in an effort to increase the growth of their cultivated plants. The potassium element contained in potassium fertilizer has many benefits for plant growth. In the market, potassium fertilizers can be found in various forms and types. It's just that, even though the shape and type are different, the potassium fertilizers both function to meet the K nutrient needs that are needed by plants. The types of potassium fertilizers include potassium sulfate fertilizer, potassium chloride, and patent-kali fertilizer.
Potassium sulfate fertilizer
Potassium fertilizer which is classified as a pioneer in the Indonesian market. Its existence is the first among other potassium fertilizers. Potassium sulfate fertilizer is made from a mixture of potassium oxide and sulfuric acid, so the name is often referred to as ZK or Zwavelzure fertilizer. This fertilizer is in the form of small granules with a white color. It is not hygroscopic and reacts acid when applied to the soil. Potassium sulfate fertilizer in the market can be found in 2 kinds. The first is ZK 90 with K2O content of 45% to 90% and ZK 96 which has K2O content of 52%.
Potassium chloride fertilizer
Potassium fertilizer which is currently quite rare is found in the market, because the price is quite expensive. Nevertheless, potassium chloride fertilizer, which is better known as KCl fertilizer, is still sought after and used by farmers to meet K nutrient needs in their cultivated plants. Like ZK fertilizer, KCl fertilizer can also be found in 2 types, namely KCl 80 which has a K2O content of 53% and KCl 90 which has a K2O content of 58%.
Potassium fertilizer made from a mixture of potassium oxide and magnesium sulfate. This fertilizer contains 21% to 30% K2O nutrients and 6% to 19.5% MgO nutrients. Patent-kali fertilizer is generally used in sub-tropical areas because of its high MgO nutrient content. It is known that soils in sub-tropical areas are generally deficient in MgO.
Deficiency / deficiency of potassium in plants is a bit difficult to know the symptoms, because these symptoms are rarely shown when the plant is still young. The leaves turn shriveled or curly (for potato plants will roll) and sometimes shiny, especially on old leaves, but not evenly.
Furthermore, since the tips and edges of the leaves look yellow, this color can also be seen between the bones of the leaves in the end the leaves appear dirty spots (red brown), often the part with these spots falls so that the leaves look jagged and then die. The stems are weak and short, so the plant looks stunted. Fruits grow imperfectly, small, poor quality, low yields and can not stand to be stored. In coconut and citrus plants, the fruit is easy to fall.
For bulbous plants, the tuber yield is very low and the carbohydrate content is very low. Meanwhile, excess potassium in plants can cause nitrogen deficiency in plants and can affect the absorption of other positive ions.
